Directions to
Billerica's Winning Pond and Veteran's Park
Adjacent to Winning Pond, whose margin is lined with former summer homes (some now converted to year-round use), are Billerica's Vietnam Veterans Park athletic complex and the Middlesex County Radio-controlled-flying Club's mini-airport. A sign near the grassy lot warns of "Low flying aircraft"; be prepared to duck! Pond and parking are situated just off Treble Cove Road, almost precisely across from the House of Correction, and feature a stunning panoramic view of this facility. To get there:
From Everywhere
Take Route 3 to Exit 28 (Treble Cove Road). At the head of the exit ramp, whether you've been traveling north or south, turn to the right. This should aim you toward Carlisle and the House of Correction. Proceed 0.6 miles to Veteran's Park (where flags of all the armed services prominently fly), turn left at the entrance, and drive past the new flag park and the old R(adio) C(ontrolled) Flyers Clubhouse on the left to the access road for Veteran's Park. Drive down the access road, keeping Winning Pond on the right, to the big new parking area constructed there to serve Billerica's soccer fields, playground, and the Town's fancy BMX trials park. Pull in and find a spot. If you pass by the House of Correction without finding Veteran's Park, turn around at the first opportunity; you've missed it.
From Everywhere Part B
An option (which will take longer for most of you unless traffic on Route 3 is stopped dead) is to take Route 4 through Bedford. Zero your trip odometer at the fire station in Bedford Center, then drive Route 4 over the Concord River (3.4 miles) to the lights at Treble Cove Road (4.4 miles); turn right at the lights and continue along Treble Cove to Veteran's Park. The entrance is on the right at about 5.1 miles.
