Directions to
Woburn's Horn Pond and It's Sturgis Street Parking Lot
Horn Pond, famous for its Horn Pond Mountain, its historical connection with the Middlesex Canal, its beavers, and its trout, is one of Woburn's best-kept cycling secrets. The varied terrain surrounding the Pond offers hours of trails ranging from paved paths and sidewalks to "gnarly" single track demanding a high degree of confidence and technical ability from those on bikes who hope to "clean" it. In other words, there's something here for everyone, starting with the fabulous view from the top of the two hundred foot climb up the "mountain". Sorry history buffs; remains of the locks used to lift canal boats to Pond level may still exist, but finding them is another matter. They're buried under Arlington Road. Speaking of Arlington Road, both the Pond and the parking lot are located a little off Route 38 (Main Street) and on, or just a stone's throw off, Arlington. As always, we offer the following directions as an option for those who'd rather trust us than MapQuest or a GPS-based StreetFinder; those relying on the latter will find coordinates at the bottom of this sheet.
From Route 128/95
Take either Exit 34 (Winn Street) or 35 (Route 38) and drive about 1.7 miles on Winn Street, or 1.3 miles on Route 38, to Woburn Center. The Center is marked by a rotary-like Square and (usually) by massive traffic congestion. Winn Street ends at the Center; turn right here onto Pleasant Street. Route 38 bears left; bear right (feels like straight ahead) and continue on Pleasant Street. However you've contrived to reach this point, drive 0.23 miles to Arlington Road (first set of lights) and turn left. Continue a long block to Sturgis Street and turn right. Drop downhill to the Pond and look for a spot in either the little parking area or at roadside.
Avoiding Route 128/95
There's much to recommend avoiding 128/95 for those who can do it. Some possibilities are:
From Burlington: Take Winn Street to Woburn Center and Arlington Road as described above.
From Lexington: Cross to Route 3A and the Four Corners in Woburn via Russell or Woburn Streets and turn right there, toward Winchester and Pond Street (on the left shortly after Bonnell Ford); or drive Maple Street/Winchester Drive to the lights at Route 3A and go left toward Woburn and Pond Street (on the right shortly after passing Mahoney's). Turn onto Pond Street and continue down 0.9 miles to Arlington Road. Left on Arlington and, 0.6 miles later, left again on Sturgis Street.
From Stoneham: Take Marble Street/Forest Street to Washington Street in Winchester, go south on Washington Street a few blocks to Cross Street, then turn right on Cross Street and drive it to Route 38. Turn right and drive two blocks up Route 38 to Lake Street; left on Lake Street. Continue a block to Arlington Road, then turn right on it and drive 0.6 miles to Sturgis Street. Left on Sturgis.
*** Good Luck !!! ***
