Groton: Station Avenue parking for the Nashua River Rail Trail

Parking for the Nashua River Rail Trail (NRRT) is at the foot of Station Avenue in downtown Groton, just off Main Street (Routes 119/225). To find Station Avenue, motorists westbound on Routes 119/225 from points east should, after reaching downtown Groton, keep a sharp eye out for the Town Hall (a prominent red brick building looming on the left shortly after the Lawrence Academy and Route 40, both on the right); Station Avenue intersects Main Street from the left just before the Town Hall and drops down beside it a block or so to an unimproved parking area immediately adjacent to the Rail Trail. Park here.

These terminal navigation instructions presume you're already on 225/119. To make this happen, try the routes suggested below or, better yet, relieve us of all responsibility for getting you there by checking suburban road maps (or Mapquest, www.mapquest.com) and plotting your own route to Groton.

From locations south of Route 2

Drive 128/95 to Exit 29B for Route 2 west toward Acton/Fitchburg, then continue west on Route 2 for about 15 miles to Exit 40B, Route 495 North for Lowell/Lawrence. Go north on Route 495 another 2.7 miles to Exit 31 and take Route 119 west toward Groton/Townsend.  At the end of the exit ramp turn right on 119 and continue along it for another 6.8 miles; at this point the Town Hall and, just before it Station Avenue, should be on your left.

Because most of this route employs high-speed roadways, the traffic-free driving time from Route 128/95 is in the vicinity of 35 minutes. Of course there's always the matter of getting to Route 2. MapQuest estimates, for example, this will take an additional 16 minutes from the Cliff Road/Washington Street intersection in Wellesley, yielding a total transit time of 51 minutes. We recommend allowing an hour.

From locations north of Route 2

Drive 128/95 to Exit 32A for Route 3 North (Lowell/Nashua NH) and continue on Route 3 10.2 to Exit 30C-31 (Route 110/Chelmsford/I-495S/Marlboro); from there take Exit 30C toward 495S/Marlboro and, finally, merge onto 495S via the exit LEFT for Worcester. Continue on 495S 8.9 miles to Exit 31 for Route 119/Groton/Townsend and, at the end of the exit ramp, turn left on 119. Drive another 6.5 miles or so to Station Avenue in downtown Groton, and then left again there to the parking area.

MapQuest believes this will take 43 traffic-free minutes from our lodgings in Burlington. Just to be sure, we plan on an hour.
