Directions to Wellesley's Shaws (formerly Star) Market

It's tough to find a parking spot in downtown Wellesley (as if you didn't know!); it's even harder to find parking for a dozen vehicles. But downtown is a good place to originate rides going south into Sherborn and Dover and to start walks on the Cross Town Trail and Wellesley College campus. So, what's the answer? The best one we've found so far is the parking lot serving Shaws Market and its surrounding businesses; the lot's generous, free, and easy to find. If we make a point of parking inconspicuously in a far away corner, taking care not to inconvenience paying customers and attempting to resemble them as closely as possible, everyone seems to be happy. Who knows? We may even become paying customers!

To get there from Route 128/95

Drive to Newton and get off 128/95 at exit 21B (Route 16 West toward Newton Lower Falls and Wellesley); Route 16 is Washington Street. Stay on Washington Street (still Route 16) and continue about 2.6 miles, over Route 9, through the lights where Cliff Road enters from the right and, shortly thereafter, through the lights at Forest Street, past Hunnewell Park on the left, to the set of lights at State Street. Turn left here and then, after half a block or so, left again into Shaws' parking lot.

On a traffic-free day, MapQuest estimates the travel time from Route 128/95 via this means is 12 minutes. In practice a traffic-free day is a rarity, and allocating a little extra time has proven a prudent practice.

From Weston's Town Hall

Take School Street towards Wellesley, cross over Route 20 at the lights, then drive a short distance to Wellesley Street and turn right on it. Continue on Wellesley Street (becomes Weston Road in Wellesley) over the MBTA commuter rail tracks to the lights at Weston Road's intersection with Central Street (Route 135) at Wellesley College. Turn left on Central Street (soon becomes Washington Street) and take Washington past the Town Hall on the left. The progression of streets (all on your right) you'll pass on your way to State Street from the Town Hall is Wellesley Street, Morton, Sessions, then State. There's a traffic light at State; turn right. Shaws' lot is about half a block down State Street on the left.

From Wayland, Sudbury, and points west

Drive Route 20 to School Street in Weston, then proceed as above.
