Directions to
Chelmsford’s Russell Mill Pond and Town Forest
The Pond and Forest together constitute a 132 acre playground enhanced with miles of creative single-track trails laid out by local mountain bikers. Designed to challenge cyclists’ off-road skills, these trails provide hikers with a few things to think about too. Those who’ve walked (or ridden) with us through the Thanksgiving Woods, a Chelmsford conservation property abutting the Great Brook Farm, have seen and admired the southern half of Russell Pond; the directions below should deliver you to parking for the northern half. To get there:
From Route 128/95
Drive to the Route 3 exit (Exit 32) and take Route 3 north toward Lowell. Continue north 9.3 miles to Exit 29 (Route 129 - Billerica/Chelmsford) and drive the 0.3 mile long exit ramp to its intersection with Route 129/Billerica Road. Turn right, toward Chelmsford, and continue 0.3 miles (crossing back over Route 3 in the process) to the lights at Mill Road. Left on Mill Road. Drive 1.4 miles on Mill Road; your target is the soccer field access road (there’s a sign for it) on the left, just across from Raymond Road (on the right). Bump down the access road, steering to the right past the (seasonally present) PortaPotties and the playing fields to the parking area. Look for us there.
From Route 128/95 to Russell Pond should take, according to MapQuest, about 20 minutes.
A Scenic Alternative
A much more scenic but more time consuming alternative is to drive Route 4 to its intersection with Mill Road (if driving west, look for Mill Road on the right about a half mile after descending a long hill into Chelmsford from Billerica, crossing over Russell Pond, and passing a school on the right). Turn right and drive along Mill Road to the soccer-field-sign/Raymond Rd intersection, turn right again, and proceed as above.
*** Good Luck !!! ***
For those navigating to the start with a GPS system:
103 Mill Road, Chelmsford, MA 01824 or N42 34.725, W71 19.850
Note: This address should get you very close to the entrance for the soccer field. From here it’s necessary to drive down the access road to the parking lot.
