Old Concord Road

Old Concord Road is, like Saint Anne's Church, an ideal place from which to launch walks aimed at Lincoln's Mount Misery, Farrar Pond, Fairhaven Bay, Pine Hill, and Codman Farm, not to mention Concord's Walden Pond and its environs. It's offers the advantage of being a little closer the trail system. The drawback? Parking's more limited and is on-road. No problem. Just be sure not to pull so far off that your tires rest on a resident's lawn or groundcover; this, we've determined experimentally, arouses their ire. Old Concord Road is situated on Concord Road/Route 126 about a quarter mile, maybe less, north of the Codman Road-Concord Road intersection; in fact, if you're relying on MapQuest or a suburban atlas instead of us to get you to the start (always a wise precaution), this intersection's the one to shoot for. Once there you're directly across from the Church and 0.1 miles south of Old Concord Road. Taking a chance? Then the way to get there is:

From Route 128/95

Take Exit 29B for Route 2 west (toward Concord, Acton, Fitchburg, etc.). After something like 3.5 miles, Route 2 turns sharply left at a set of lights; stay on it (i.e., go left) and drive about another mile to Walden Street (Route 126). There are signs here denoting this as the exit for Walden Pond; turn left and drive downhill past the Pond about 1.8 miles to Old Concord Road. It'll be on the right. Don't expect to find an obvious, modern street sign; more likely, if there's one at all, the sign will be small and hand-made. Park on the left side of the road as close to the farm entrance (less than 100 meters from the turn onto Old Road) as possible; parking on the right is a last resort. If you must exercise it, please take care not to drive onto the neighbors lawns or into their flower beds.

Alternate Routes

For those who are Route 128 averse, viable options are:

From Lexington: Massachusetts Avenue to Route 2A (or drive 2A from downtown) to Route 2, turn right and go west on Route 2 to Walden Street (Route 126), then exit to the left for Walden Pond and Walden Street. Drive about 1.8 miles to Old Concord Road. It'll be on the right.

From points south: From Waltham, Weston, Lincoln, Wayland, Sudbury and other points south, drive Routes 20, 117, or whatever it takes to get to Route 126 north. From the lights at the intersection of Routes 117 and 126, drive north toward Lincoln about 0.5 miles to Old Concord Road (on the left).

From points north: From Bedford and Burlington, take Route 62 to the fork at Pine Hill Farm in Concord, go left onto Old Bedford Street, and continue to Route 2A (Lexington Street) at historic Merriam's Corner. Turn right on Lexington Street, drive about a mile to Heywood Street (on the left), turn left onto Heywood, drive a stone's throw to the stop sign at Walden Street, turn left again, then drive about a mile to the lights at Route 2. When they turn green, cross over and drive 1.8 miles, past Walden Pond, to Old Concord Road (on the right).
