Directions to

Concord’s Mattison Field

A landmark for Mattison Field, a relatively recent Concord Conservation Commission acquisition, is the historic, refurbished, wooden water tower used to hydrate cows until the mid 1990’s. A nice walk by itself, the Field opens onto trails paralleling the Concord River and leading to a fine wooded esker on the verge of the Concord Country Club’s fairways. The target is a small parking lot off The Old Road to Nine Acre Corner (ORNAC), on the left just after Thornton Lane for those coming south from Route 2 and on the right just after Williams Road for those coming north from Route 117. Parking is somewhat cramped and can be muddy if the ground’s wet.

To get there from Route 128/95

Take Exit 29 for Route 2 and drive west to the intersection of ORNAC and Route 2, easy to find because it’s the exit for Emerson Hospital. Turn left at the lights here, drive past the hospital, past the Country Club (it’ll be one the right), up the hill, and just a little further to Mattison Field (and its water tower).

If you’re heavily 128/95/2 averse and know how to wend your way through Concord to Emerson, by all means be our guest. That’s what we do.

From Sudbury

Best bet may be driving north from Route 20 on Concord Road to Route 117, then turning right and continuing on 117 to the lights at Sudbury Road. At this intersection go left and drive Sudbury Road toward Concord. You’ll soon come to a fork where Sudbury Road bears off to the right while the Old Road to Nine Acre Corners goes left. Stay left. In a little bit you’ll pass Williams Road (site of a large horse farm) on the left and soon thereafter come upon Mattison Field on the right.

From Wayland

Try driving Route 126 north to Route 117, then going left to the lights at Sudbury Road. Turn right onto Sudbury Road and proceed toward Concord. You’ll soon come to a fork where Sudbury Road bears off to the right while the Old Road to Nine Acre Corners goes left. Stay left. In a little bit you’ll pass Williams Road (site of a large horse farm) on the left and soon thereafter come upon Mattison Field on the right.
