Horn Pond, famous for its Horn Pond Mountain, its historical connection with the Middlesex Canal, its beavers, and its trout, is one of Woburn's best-kept cycling (and walking!) secrets. The varied terrain surrounding the Pond offers hours of trails ranging from paved paths and sidewalks to "gnarly" single track demanding a high degree of confidence and technical ability from those who hope to "clean" it. In other words, there's something here for everyone, starting with the fabulous view from the top of the two hundred foot climb up the "mountain." Sorry history buffs; remains of the locks used to lift canal boats from the Aberjona River to Pond level may still exist, but finding them is a matter for archeologists; they’re buried under Arlington Street.
Don't let this panic you into thinking Horn Pond parking is equally hard to find; it's not. In fact it's easy. Both the Pond and the parking lot are located a stone's throw off Route 38 (Main Street) on Woburn's Lake Avenue, right at the Winchester line. As always, we recommend asking www.mapquest.com for driving directions by entering your starting coordinates and "arlington road at lake avenue" as the destination (not exactly the parking lot, but George Washington could have heaved a silver dollar from there to it).
Alternatively, try pot luck with the directions given below.
From Route 128/95
Take Exit 35 for Route 38 east and drive about 2.5 miles to Lave Avenue; it's on the right. The countdown is Buckman Street, Stoddard Street, Wiley Street, Lake Avenue. Turn right onto Lake Avenue and drive a block to the Pond and Arlington Street, then just a little further to the parking lot. It's on the water side of the road.
Avoiding Route 128/95
There's much to recommend avoiding 128/95 for those who can do it. Some possibilities are:
From Burlington: Take Winn Street to Route 38 and drive south toward Winchester.
From Lexington: Cross to Route 3A in Woburn or Winchester via Russell or Woburn Streets and go south, or Maple Street/Winchester Drive and go north, to Pond Street. Turn onto Pond Street and continue down it to the parking lot.
From Stoneham: Take Marble Street/Forest Street to Washington Street in Winchester, go south on Washington Street a few blocks to Cross Street, then turn right on Cross Street and drive it to Route 38. Lake Avenue is two blocks up Route 38 on the right.
*** Good Luck !!! ***
