Ginn Field

Ginn Field is an adult (softball) and kids (playground) recreational area sandwiched between the Aberjona River/Mystic Valley Parkway and the MBTA commuter rail tracks in downtown Winchester. Strangely, although the Field abuts Bacon Street, the only access is by driving through the MBTA parking lot off Waterfield Road and along the tracks a quarter mile or so. The lot entrance is situated at the intersection of Waterfield and Thompson Roads, the coordinates you should employ if consulting a suburban map set or opting to ask for directions from MapQuest. As a fall back position, here are our suggestions:

From Route 128/95

Take Route 3/Cambridge Street (Exit 33A) inbound toward Winchester and Boston, past Mahoney's Garden Center (on the right), and through the lights immediately after Mahoney's at Wildwood Street. At Church Street, the next set of lights, turn left and drive into downtown Winchester proper. Look for the little town common on the right, and turn right onto Waterfield just before it (this is a little tricky, so observe the 25 mph speed limit to improve your chances of spotting Waterfield on the first try). Drive down Waterfield, under the tracks, and turn right into the MBTA parking lot. Go all the way through it and out the other side on a little dirt road, continuing to Ginn Field.

From Burlington

Drive down Route 3A and under 128/95, where 3A becomes Route 3/Cambridge Street, and proceed as above from there.

From Lexington

Unless you live close to 128/95 (and perhaps even if you do), a faster route is to take Maple Street toward Winchester, cross straight over Lowell Road at the lights, climb up Winchester Drive, and drop down the other side of the hill (where the road changes its name to Johnson Road) to the lights at Route 3. Turn right, then left at the next set of lights (Church Street), and follow the terminal navigation instructions given above.

From points north of Winchester

Sneaking down from Route 28 via Marble Street/Forest Street is a quick way to get to Ginn Field from Stoneham and points north. Once in Winchester, drive Forest Street to the lights at its intersection with Washington Street, and turn left, proceeding toward downtown. Cross directly over Mount Vernon Street to the Mystic Valley Parkway and drive down the Parkway about a block to Waterfield Street, which pops up on the right. Turn right on Waterfield, then left into the MBTA parking lot, and, as above, through it to Ginn Field.

*** GOOD LUCK!!! ***

For those navigating to the start with MapQuest or a GPS system:

35 Waterfield Road, Winchester, MA 01890 or N42 27.081, W71 08.245

(This get's you to the MBTA parking lot; then, as mentioned above, it's necessary to continue through the lot on a gnarly dirt road to reach Ginn Field)
